Catechism is education in the faith of Children, youth and adults which includes the teaching of Christian doctrine, imparted in an organic and systematic way, with a view of initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life. It is the mission and task entrusted to the Church by the Lord, to safeguard and impart faith. Catechesis is to present the sacred doctrines of faith and morals, and make it acceptable and experiential to the faithful, especially the children.
Our children who are growing up in diverse cultures are exposed to a very different cultures. It becomes very important for us to empower them spiritually so that they grow in good Christian faith and understand our cultures and values. This is a mission entrusted to each of us by our Lord.
Text books in use by the Syro Malabar Church in Kerala right from classes 1 to 10 were imported by us to help with this mission of educating our children in our faith. Today, our classes start off with a prayer followed by a hymn praising our lord and praying to the holy spirit to descend upon us. This is followed by an introduction of a Saint by senior students and the catechetical pledge. The students then disperse to their classes.
Examinations are conducted annually and prizes distributed to the students who come first and second in these examinations during the Annual Feast conducted at Inchicore parish.
We find that it is not possible for us to complete all portions in the limited time we have on the First Sunday of the month and thus we will be introducing special classes in the near future to enable us to complete the portions which will benefit our children. The time-table is being worked upon and will be rolled out shortly. We would also like to acknowledge the support from the parents who have been very keen on having the Christian faith imparted to their children and have been bringing their children without fail to Catechism classes. We look forward to their continued support in this mission.
